Who We Are

Staff

Marc Esser, Principal Project Engineer & Owner, MS (Computer Science & Physics), CEM, BEMP, LEED GA

Marc was born in Germany, the cradle of good engineering practice. Marc holds a Master's Degree in Computer Science with a minor in Renewable Energy Physics, is accredited as a LEED Green Associate, a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and a Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP). Marc is proud to have turned his passions about energy and technology into a thriving small business. When not thinking about how to make things happen for his customers, he enjoys spending time with his kids, club music, photography, November Project, road biking, volleyball and European cars.

Bo White, Senior Project Engineer, MS (Mechanical Engineering), PE (Mechanical), LEED AP, CBCP

Bo has lived in San Diego since 2007 and in California most of his life. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from UCSD. Bo is a Licensed Professional Engineer (Mechanical) in California, Hawaii and Washington. He is also accredited as a LEED AP, as an AEE Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), and as an ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP). Before joining the NegaWatt team, he worked for five years at a mechanical engineering firm designing HVAC systems and performing energy analysis.

Eric Martinez, Project Engineer, BS (Electrical Engineering)

Eric has pursued his passion in clean energy by evaluating, developing, and manufacturing clean energy technologies. At San Diego Gas and Electric, he worked on advanced grid-scale components and systems as well as emerging technologies for commercial and industrial customers. After this, he led his team to develop a low-cost flywheel energy storage system at Quantum Energy Storage and Omnes Energy. Eric has a BS in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and was honored with the Electrical Engineer of the Year Award.

Erin Simpson, Project Engineer, MS (Engineering Science)

Erin is driven by the goal to contribute to a sustainable human future. She holds a BA in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MS in Engineering Sciences from UCSD. Previously, she worked in power performance verification for utility-scale wind farms, and came to NegaWatt to pursue an interest in the sustainable building industry.

Alexandra (Sasha) Milovanova, Communications Manager, MS (Public Relations)

Alexandra has a Bachelor's Degree in Cultural Studies and a Master's Degree in Public Relations. After graduation, she went to work for some of the largest natural gas providers in the world. She took on coordination and planning of conferences and of workshops, and outreach to high-ranking politicians. Later, her focus shifted towards non-fossil fuels and energy efficiency. A recent highlight of her career is her role as the Director of Communication for the Future Energy Forum 2017 in Kasachstan. Her responsibilities included coordination of cross-functional teams of media, designers, web developers, and multimedia producers. Sasha moved to San Diego in 2015. When she isn't crafting Power Points or herding cats for one of her projects, she and her family can be found out and about exploring Southern California.

Subcontractors

Anna Kaelin, Project Analyst and Business Development Lead, MS (Renewable and Sustainable Energy)

Anna has a BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse and an MS in Renewable and Sustainable Energy from the University of Colorado Boulder. Anna spent a year with the Minnesota Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council where she organized events on green building and supported school districts with benchmarking and energy efficiency efforts. Most recently, she worked for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where she researched the economic and social impacts of wind development. She is a lead author on a 2019 report entitled, "Economic Impacts of Wind Energy in Colorado: Case Study Rush Creek Wind Farm." When not promoting clean energy and sustainability, Anna enjoys hiking, skiing, practicing yoga and going to concerts.

George Burmeister, Principal Policy Specialist & President, Colorado Energy Group, MPA

George has been an energy policy expert for 20+ years, working in California primarily and earning lots of frequent flier miles between Boulder, Colorado and the cities and energy utilities he serves. He has an MPA, was a Senior Speech Writer in the Clinton Administration, and was appointed Communications Director of the State Energy Advisory Board (STEAB) by the Bush Administration. His experience reaches from developing comprehensive solar energy and energy efficiency policies for cities and counties to performing market research for Codes And Standards Enhancement (CASE) reports on behalf of the California IOUs. When not trying to reduce emissions via his work George enjoys hiking, camping, tennis, running and spending time with his family and his miniature Schnauzer, Jackson.

Eric Sikkema, Policy Specialist, Colorado Energy Group, MPA

Eric is a public policy wonk.  He is passionate about how the interaction of energy, environmental and economic policies and programs make this a better world for all of us. Since earning his Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Colorado, he has worked with and for state and local governments for the last 25 years, most recently in California. A native of Michigan, he now lives in Colorado and enjoys all that the mountains have to offer.
